The origin of the United Kingdom has been traced to 1603 when King James VI, King of Scots, also became the King of England and Wales. This Kingdom was further strengthened in 1707 when the Scottish Parliament agreed to dissolve so that the Kingdom of Scots could join the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Wales. In 1801 Ireland joined the United Kingdom of Great Britain. However by 1922, the South of Ireland had achieved independance as the 'Irish Free State' and no longer belonged to the United Kingdom of Great Britain.
